Overview:
Draconem are a genetically unstable race, cobbled together with magic only a few hundred years ago. They stick out like a sore thumb in a crowd, and are commonly discriminated against by other races that view them as ‘impure’ or ‘lesser’. A common discriminatory term is ‘scaleback’.
Physical Attributes:
This race is somewhat human in appearance, though is shorter than humans on average, reaching 5’3-5’8 for both genders. Their skin is usually pale like an elf’s, though their defining feature is the scales that cover parts of their body.
These scales are usually distributed randomly across their body, with common places being the shoulders, neck, cheeks, wrists, ankles, forehead, and hips. Full coverage is unheard of.
The scales are useful for resisting harsh weather, both cold and hot. They can resist more hot weathers than they can cold ones, though they will fair in whatever climate they are in.
Something that every mature Draconem has is a rhombus-shaped patch of scales on their back, which usually grows in at around ages 20-25. This is called either a 'pride patch' or a 'call patch' as it is the Draconem's 'call to maturity'.
These scales can be used to withstand metal blades and sharp objects for a short time, and while it is slightly uncomfortable, they feel very little.
If cut or otherwise damaged, a Draconem's scales will only regrow if most of the scale is still intact after an injury, the threshold being somewhere around 60-70 percent. If a scale is under this percentage, it will simply heal itself and become a half of a scale, exposing the soft pink flesh underneath.
Their hands and feet are generally similar to that of a human or elf, though some Draconem have been seen to have 'armored' feet or hands, which are coated in scales and are larger than the more common, fleshy variant.
Their hair is almost exactly the same as a High Elf, most commonly being blonde or red, though they more commonly have brown hair than High Elves. Between their ears and the top of their heads are a pair of stubby black horns, though this only appears in around 60 percent of Draconem.
A Draconem's eyes are commonly colored yellow, dark violet, or blue, though other colors like green and gray can occasionally be seen. Something that sets them apart from other races is their sclera. While in other races it is called 'the white of the eye', for a Draconem, this area is either black, or a very dark gray color.
The teeth of a Draconem are sharper than that of other races, and some can occasionally have slightly enlarged canines.
Lastly, a Draconem has a medium length, scaly tail that usually reaches around two to three feet. This tail can move to show affection or other emotions, but it does not move by much. The tail's scales are the softest of any other type on the Draconem's body.
Lifespan:
Draconem are considered mature when the scaly rhombus appears on their back at around age twenty to twenty-five, and they live to be around 140 to 145 years old.
Reproduction:
A Draconem can reproduce with another Draconem, which is to be expected.
They can reproduce with Humans and Elves, and though the fertility rate is very low, it is slightly higher with an Elf than it is with a Human.
A Draconem-Human will retain almost all of the features of a Draconem, though it's scales will become slightly more frail all around. Additionally, it's scale coverage will be slightly less than a full blooded Draconem. Their ears will usually be smaller, but will retain their scaliness. They will also lose their sharper teeth in favor of more human-like ones.
A Draconem-Elf retains it's full scale coverage, though the scales are much softer than even a Draconem-Human, bringing them almost to a vanity feature. Their ears will have a much higher chance to develop without scales, and will point either upwards, or straight on. A Draconem-Elf can not have scaly hands or feet, though everything else is possible, just like in a full blooded Draconem.
With either Draconem-Humans or Draconem-Elves, they will either completely lose their black scleras in exchange for white ones, or rarely have a neutral gray color.
A Draconem-Human has a shorter lifespan than a normal Draconem at about 85-95 years, while a Draconem-Elf's lifespan is on average 165 years long. Additionally, Draconem-Humans have a slightly weakened immune system, whereas Draconem-Elves have considerably weakened immune systems.
Both crossbreeds are sterile.
Languages:
The most common language for a Draconem is not their own. While it is not considered a dead language, Draconei has been abandoned in some places entirely in favor of the Elven language. It is a much more 'common' occurrence to find a Draconem that speaks Elven than it is to find one that speaks Common. About thirty percent of all Draconem only speak Draconei still, however.
History:
The Draconem are a relatively new race, and have gone through bouts of slavery amongst a considerable amount of racism. Viewed as a half-breed, they aren't seen as much more than a mistake by the more racist members of society.
Their history and inception is not known to themselves, let alone other people from outside of the race. It is theorized that they could have been created by a group of mages that tried to combine a dragon and a human, and others say that they were originally humans that were gifted a blessing by a 'dragon god'. Though both main theories are relatively well known, nobody knows for sure where they came from.
Of the little information on the history of the race, it is clear that it involved slavery. The most common theory is that the Humans and Elves used to create the Draconem were originally slaves, which were experimented on, having their bodies shifted to the point of no return through extreme magical experimentation.
At the present, Draconem are not viewed very highly. Seen by other native races as 'science projects' or 'mistakes', it's very unlikely that any arriving races will view them much differently.
Note: Draconem Crossbreeds are not playable, unless they are the child of two already existing characters. You can not make two characters for the sake of playing a Draconem Crossbreed.
